Militants attack army camps at Uri and Soura, J&K
- Uri attack comes in the wake of election to be held after four days
- NarendraModi scheduled to campaign in the region
- Within 10 hours another camp at Soura attacked
Even as Baramulla district of Kashmir is about to go for third phase of polls on December 9, there was a terror attack on an army camp in the Uri area. Six militants, eight soldiers including one officer and three police men were killed in a fierce gun battle that ensued. The attack happened at 3.10am on the camp at Mohra in Uri Tehsil.
IG of Police of Kashmir, AG Mir confirmed the deaths. The terrorists may have entered through the POK; the same is being investigated, the officials said.
The attack comes in the wake of elections four days later in Uri and six more constituencies in the district. The area, north-west of Srinagar houses a large army base. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is due to campaign in the area, next week. Just a few days back, there was another attempt by the terrorists to infiltrate near Handwara area of Kupwara district. In an attempt to foil the infiltration bid, one army personnel was killed in addition to the six terrorists. This was at a time when the people of Kupwara were in the process of voting, indicating a clear intent to disrupt peace, as was stated by the chief minister Omar Abdullah.
It may be because BJP is trying aggressively to gain foothold in the state and is indulging in heavy campaigning or the separatists trying to get people to boycott the polls – there has been a spurt of violence in the state during elections. The militant activity is also adding to the violence.
However militancy no longer seems to be the issue in Kashmir. To start with most political parties focused on issues like development and other issues affecting people. The Assembly elections saw a turnout of around 70% voters during the first and second phase. And this was despite the extreme weather (with winter at its peak) and a boycott call by the separatists. The elections being held in five phases will end on December 23 in the valley.
Within 10 hours of the attack on Uri, another army camp at Soura region was attacked at around 2pm. One militant is dead and the firing between militants and police is underway.
