Maneka Gandhi took u-turn on paternity leave
New Delhi: Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi backtracked on her earlier statement on paternity leave. Now she says, that she never said any thing questioning the idea of paternity leave.
Maneka Gandhi sparked a controversy by heckling paternity leave will just be another holiday for men. But realising the backlash she generated while introducing a maternity bill, the minister today took complete U Turn on the issue.
She now claimed that she never made such a comment.
‘No I did not say that,” she said.
“Ideally raising a child is the responsibility of both the parents. We want that. But this maternity bill is just the beginning. Hopefully in future we will have a much more sophisticated bill.”
Maneka Gandhi forced the Union Labour Ministry to amend the Maternity Benefit Act of 1961, and increase maternity leave in the private sector from 12 to 26 weeks. However, rejected the idea of paternity leave in our country by reportedly saying, “I will be happy to give it but for a man; it will be just a holiday, he won’t do anything.”
