Letter bomb explodes in Varun Gandhi’s face
- BJP isolates its MP in hour of crisis
New Delhi: Sanjay Gandhi’s son Varun Gandhi, a BJP Member of Lok Sabha, is in trouble after the letter bomb exploded in his face. New York-based businessman and whistle-blower Edmonds Allen sent a letter to Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) on September 16 enclosing a DVD. Allan had alleged that the young BJP MP was caught in a honey-trap set by arms dealer Abhishek Varma.
The BJP which had promoted the other Gandhi (Maneka Gandhi’s son) as a rival of Rahul Gandhi (Rajiv’s son) has been cold shouldering him for some time. After receiving the letter from the whistle-blower, the party has done everything to isolate Varun. The party has told its spokesman not to defend Varun Gandhi. The party has taken a position that Varun has to defend himself and come out clean.
It is believed that the DVD sent by Allan contains dozens of photos showing the BJP MP Varun Gandhi in compromising positions with a Moroccan beauty. Abhishek Varma, who served a jail term, has been blackmailing Varun Gandhi showing the 2002 photos and getting the minutes of the meetings of the parliamentary committee on Defence matters, according to Allan.
Varun Gandhi, Union Minister Maneka Gandhi’s only son, denied all the allegations and said even if one percent of the allegations were proved to be true, he would quit politics for ever. He threatened to sue senior lawyer Prashant Bhushan for making allegations against him and demanding a thorough probe into them.
Yogendra Yadav, leader of Swaraj Abhiyan, said it was public knowledge that brokers were involved in all the defence deals during the UPA regime. But, he asked, what has the NDA government been doing in the last two and half years about the scams in defence purchases? Both Prashant Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav demanded a thorough probe into the allegations against Varun Gandhi. Sandeep Dikshit, senior Congress leader, criticized Prashant Bhushan for making reckless allegations. Vikki Chowdhury, a friend of Abhishek Varma, commented that the pictures would tell the true story.
The BJP national leadership has not been very happy with Varun Gandhi for some time. Varun’s relationship with the party high command had soured when he launched a premature poster campaign some months ago projecting himself as the BJP chief ministerial candidate. Though he pleaded that the poster campaign was not intended that way, the party boss, Amit Shah, had expressed his displeasure.
Maneka Gandhi maintains an independent profile and does not mingle with other Cabinet ministers. They take care of their secular image and do not indulge in Hindutva sloganeering and patriotic showmanship. They, obviously, have no friends in the BJP high command.
