Kiwis dream run continues
- Defeat South Africa in photo-finish
- Second semi on Thursday between India and Australia
Auckland: Grant Elliot sent New Zealand soaring into the final of World Cup 2015 by hitting 84. Elliot and Cory Anderson (58) produced a superb 103-run partnership to take Kiwis to the last leg of the tournament. New Zealand has beaten South Africa by four wickets at Eden Park here. It is for the first time in the history of the World Cup for New Zealand to enter the final. Elliot had finished the match with a huge six in great style. South Africa Captain AB de Villiers and his team mates were in tears when they realized that they are out of the tournament. The first semi-final match on Tuesday has been a thriller and a very well played one. NZ held its nerve and entered the final. South Africa got choked in the photo-finish. NZ had romped home with just one ball to spare in rain-soaked match in which the overs were restricted. As de villers rightly said the SA players gave their all. It was so close but so far for the Proteas. The Kiwis have beaten up 299 runs in 42.5 overs.
The fourth wicket partnership of 103 runs of 73 balls between AB de velliers (65 not out) and Faf Du Plessis (82) did not help SA to win. Kiwi’s skipper Brendon McCullum made a quicifire 59 off 26 balls at the beginning of the innings. The Elliot-Anderson duo did the rest of the job. Martin Guptill who made a double ton against West Indies was unlucky to get run out when he was going strong at 34. South Africa won the toss and elected to bat. The batted well. But the New Zealanders batter even better.
Now the cricket fans are looking forward to the second semi-finals to be played by India and Australia, the defending champion and the four-time champion, on Thursday.
