Jayalalithaa Passes Away At 11.30 PM Monday
Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa is no more. She gave up after battling the death heroically for 74 days. The doctors at Apollo Hospitals announced that Jayalalithaa had passed away at 11.30 PM on Monday. The end came almost thirty hours after she suffered cardiac arrest.
The 68 year old Jayalalithaa was admitted in Apollo Hospitals on September 22. She was treated by a team of experts who included doctors from AIIMS, Delhi, and a doctor from London. She was reportedly progressing and was also able to have her meal. But suddenly she suffered cardiac arrest at 4.30 on Sunday. She could not recover from the setback. The doctors from AIIMS and the doctors from London could not revive her heart in spite of best efforts.
While the hospital authorities were preparing the statement to announce the demise of the most charismatic leader of Tamil Nadu, the AIADMK MLAs met at the party headquarters to elect O Panneerselvam as leader of the AIADMK legislature party. Jaya’s confidante Sasikala is likely to take over the party reins as General Secretary. Governor Ch Vidyasagarrao who flew into Chennai from Mumbai on Sunday evening has been directing the operations in consultation with union Home Minister Rajnath Singh. Venkaiah Naidu, Union Information Minister, reached Chennai on Sunday and stayed back supervising the arrangements. He had also spoken to the prime minister appraising the later with the situation in Chennai. Police have been deployed all over the city and the Apollo Hospitals and Jayalalithaa’s residence Poes Garden have been cordoned off.
A three-day national mourning had been declared by the Union Government as a respect for the most popular leader.
Panneerselvam will be sworn in by the Governor Vidyasagara Rao soon. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Jaya’s demise has left a void in politics. Tributes have been pouring in from all over the country.
