Jagan Demands CBI Enquiry Into Vizag Land Scam
Visakhapatnam: YSR Congress Chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy here on Thursday demanded a CBI enquiry into the land scam that was unearthed recently. Alleging that big hands including the Chief Minister, his cabinet colleagues and officials were involved in the scam, he said investigation by CBI was necessary to bring out the facts.
Speaking at the ‘Save Visakha’, a dharna organized by the YSR Congress opposite GVMC Office in protest against the land scam, Jagan Mohan Reddy said the TDP government cancelled the public hearing on the issue fearing opposition from farmers of the region. Opposing investigation by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) on the grounds that the team was composed of officials working under Chandrababu Naidu, he observed such team could not act impartially. He likened investigation by SIT to ordering an investigation by Kumbhakarna into Ravana’s taking hostage of Sithamma. He said an investigation by Hanumanthudu would certainly deliver goods. “Hanumanthu will kick both Ravana and Kumbhakarna,” he said amid laughter from the people around, preferring a CBI enquiry to that of SIT.
Jagan alleged that as many as 350 acres of land was unlawfully acquired by one Paruchuri Bhaskara Rao, a close relative of Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao. The same benami took loans from banks by using those land records, he said. A thousand crore worth of lands, which had been earlier allocated for a housing scheme for the poor, was given away to MVSS Murthi, a close relative of CM Chandrababu Naidu, he alleged.
The Telugu Desam leaders planned to acquire lands for cheaper rates from Mudapaka farmers by threatening them that they would have to lose them under land pooling scheme. He questioned the veracity of the statement of the officials that several records concerning lands were lost in Hudhud cyclonic storm. He ridiculed the officials by saying that the Collectorate was intact and did not submerge in waters.
Charging that MLA Bandaru Satyanarayana Murthy grabbed land in Pendurthy, he said MLAs, Ministers including Chandrababu’s son Nara Lokesh had their share in the scams unearthed in the region. “TDP leaders first buy lands around a place where the government decided to set up a project. Later, the government will acquire lands from farmers in that region excepting those bought by their own leaders,” he said citing the fate of farmers who were to give their lands for Bhogapuram airport.
Alleging that records pertaining to 1, 00,006 acres of land were tampered with, Jagan said, many assigned lands were pulled away from the beneficiaries including ex-service men. He sought to know from Chandrababu Naidu as to whose lands he acquired for construction of TDP Visakhapatnam district office in Dasapalla Layout. All throughout his speech, he trained his guns at the fledgling TDP leader and IT Minister Nara Lokesh by alleging that he had links with the scams. “Nakintha…Lokesh babuki antha,” was the Telugu phrase he used in his speech.
Jagan assured the gathering that his party would fight for justice on behalf of them. If the struggle did not meet with success for any reason, the YSR Congress would do justice to all of them in a year, he said while assuring that their party would come to power after a year. “We will not let an inch of land to go into other’s hands. We are coming to power in a year. I will ensure they throw up what they ate up,” he said.
Party leaders Karanam Dhrmasree, Gudivada Amarnath also spoke at the protest. Left parties, Loksatta and other mass organisations extended their support to the dharna. Hundreds of farmers participated in the protest.
