IUML Retains Malappuram LS Seat In Kerala

Malappuram Lok Sabha seat in Kerala has been a bastion of IUML for decades. The seat that fell vacant on Ahmad’s death has been retained by the party without any difficulty.

Malappuram (Kerala): Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) legislator PK Kunhalikutty has won the Malappuram by-poll in Kerala by  a big margin of 1,71,038 votes.

CPM candidate and youth leader MB Faisal stood in second position while the BJP Candidate came a distant third. The results were announced on Monday.

Kunhalikutty said after winning that his party has led in village councils where the Left parties were ruling. The polling took place on April 12. Over 71.3 percent of voters cast their votes. “I spoke on the need of secular outlook. The unity of the Congress-led UDF has helped us,” Kunhalikutty commented.  The by-poll was necessitated on the death of former Union Minister Ahmad, who was the sitting MP. Ahmad won the seat in 2014 by a margin of 1.94 lakh votes.

In 2016 Assembly elections all the seven Assembly segments in Malappuram Lok Sabha constituency were bagged by IUML candidates but the total majority of all of the put together was far less (1.18 lakh) that the majority got by Ahmad. The margin has increased from the 2014 level. The outcome is an indicator of the Left Front Government led by Pinaray Vijayan which came to power about 10 months back.
