Irom Sharmila’s Wedding With British Boyfriend Held Up

The relentless and iconic fighter from Manipur, who fasted for more than 16 years in protest against imposition of APSFA in her State, will have to wait for her wedding to be solemnised. The wait will not be for long though.

Kodaikanal: Irom Sharmila, the bold and persistent fighter against the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in Manipur, who wants to wed her long-term British friend, will have wait longer before she can tie the knot.

Sharmila has filed an application for marrying her long-time friend, Desmond Coutinho of UK, in the office the Sub-Registrar of Kodaikanal, a hill station in Tamil Nadu. She moved here after giving up her 16-year fast and is living with her friend. It is said she has come to Kodaikanal in search of peace and liked the place.

The delay in Sharmila’s wedding is owing to her filing the application to marry Coutinho under the Hindu Marriage Act. The Sub Registrar has told her that since it is an inter-religious marriage, she will have to file the application under the Special Marriage Act.

The application will be displayed on the notice board for any objections and the marriage can be performed after the expiry of the 30-day notice period. Sharmila will have to wait until then to solemnise her wedding.

Although she was defeated in her fight in Manipur, the iconic protester is determined to continue her cause without giving up. She has hit the headlines many times during her more than 16-year-long hunger strike, demanding the withdrawal of AFSPA from Manipur.

She ended the fast in last August and declared that she would join active politics. She contested from Manipur against the then Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh but was defeated.
