Irom Sharmila Loses Badly, Congress Retains Manipur
New Delhi: Manipur had given its ‘Iron Lady’ Irom Sharmila a humiliating defeat when she was polled just 90 votes. She contested against Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh in his strong hold, Thoubal.
44-teal old Sharmila ended her 16-year fast against the Soecial Armed Forces Special Powers Act last year.
After giving up fast she launched a political party called Prople’s Resurgence and Justice Alliance. It was supported by AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal.
The BJP that had a nominal presence in the north eastern State had improved its position remarkably by winning 21 seats while the ruling Congress party bagged 28 seats and independents won 11.
