Indrani Mukherjea Booked For Rioting In The Prison
Mumbai: Media entrepreneur Indrani Mukherjea, who was booked for allegedly killing her daughter Sheen Bora is in trouble again. This time, she was booked for inciting violence and rioting in Mumbai’s Byculla Jail.
Prison sources said that Indrani was among a group of prisoners who were booked for rioting after an inmate was allegedly beaten to death on Friday.
The Police officials said that along with Indrani, several other inmates were also booked. They said that they were also booked for assault on public servants and burning prison property.
According to media reports, six jail officials have also been booked in connection with the death of 45-year-old Manjula Shetye, who was serving a jail term for murder.
The post-mortem report of Shetye clearly revealed that she was assaulted basing on the bruises on her body. Later, a case against the rioters was filed by the police on Saturday.
Dean of JJ Hospital TP Lahane told a leading newspaper that the woman’s lungs were severely damaged and that was the prime reason for her death. Apart from that, she also had injuries on her scalp. Her inmate testified that Shetye was beaten by a sub-inspector and five other prison guards.
Shetye’s brother Sharad said that he was not informed about the incident until the next day.
Sources said that around 200 inmates, including Mukherjea, started rioting soon after Shetye was murdered. Reports suggested that the rioters went to the prison’s terrace and began sloganeering against the incident. The riots escalated as the irate inmates attacked prison staff and damaged property.
