Indian Women Team Beats South Africa

Colombo: Harmanpreet Kaur did what Javed Miandad did years ago by lifting the penultimate delivery to a huge six to clinch the result in favour of India against South Africa in the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier Final at P Sara Oval on Tuesday. India won by one wicket. Short of nine runs in six balls, Indian women were in dire situation when they lost Poonam Yadav for 7 runs in the first delivery. However, Harmanpreet pulled Letsoalo over deep midwicket for a six to bring India back into the game. She made the couple of runs needed for a win from the final ball.

Indian women had to make 245 for a win. Opener Mona Meshram made 59 and Deepti Sharma hit 71 in their 122-run partnership for the first wicket. Earlier, South Africa were all out for 244 runs in 49.4 overs. M du Preez with 40 was the top-scorer for South Africa. She was followed by Niekerk (37) and L Lee (37) with respectable scores but the team could not build big score on that foundation. India is assured of a place in this year’s Women Cup, Indian women have reinforced their strength. South Africa has beaten India in a practice match in preparation for the tournament. However, India had won the match played as part of the tournament by 49 runs in the Super Six stage.
