Indian Origin Helped Police Catch New York Bombing Suspect
New York: An Indian origin bar owner, Harinder Bains called police after he had spotted bombing suspect sleeping in the doorway of his establishment on Monday, leading to his capture and arrest.
Later police identified him as Afghani American Ahmad Khan Rahami and a suspect in the weekend bombings in New York and New Jersey in which 29 people were wounded.
The businessman had just seen Rahami while watching TV news on his laptop. Initially, Harinder Bains thought Rahami was a “drunk guy” wandering the streets. But when he woke him, he recognized him as the man whose face had been flashed on repeat as the bombing suspect.
He walked to his other store across the street and called the police. “I’m just a regular citizen doing what every citizen should do. Cops are the real heroes,” said Mr Bains.
When the police came, Rahami pulled out a gun and started firing, shooting an officer in the chest, and shot at a police car, leaving another policeman injured.
The chase ended when the 28-year-old suspect was shot multiple times. He was taken away on a stretcher. He was taken to a hospital with his hands shackled behind his back.
Indo-American sikh community praised Harinder Bains for his proactive role in helping police to catch Rahami.
