Hottest Day In AP Assembly, TDP, YSR Congress Lock Horns
- DARA GOPI FROM AMARAVATI
- Speaker screens video clips of his statement on women empowerment
- House drops debate on AgirGold
- Speaker, Minister Pullarao gets support
The day turned out to be the hottest in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly on Thursday. The House began to taste the heat with the Opposition YSR Congress giving adjournment motion to pass a resolution seeking special category status to the State. As the Speaker rejected the adjournment motion claiming that the government had already spoke on it, the YSR Congress members held a protest in the Well of the House insisting on the House to take up discussion on special category status.
When the House moved on to the Zero Hour and Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu gave a statement on the AgirGold issue the House witnessed exchange of words between the Opposition and the Treasury Benches. Chandrababu Naidu said that the government had taken up the case and the CBCID is looking into the case. He said that the AgirGold was one of the corruption cases that his government had to face from the failures of the previous Congress government. However, he said his government would continue to help the victims of the AgriGold deposits scheme.
Responding to the Chief Minister’s statement, Opposition leader Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy said that the Chief Minister had failed to give a constructive reply to the victims, who have been waiting and fighting for justice. He also accused Minister Prathipati Pullarao of purchasing the AgriGold lands after he became the Minister. He alleged that Pullarao’s wife had purchased the lands from Uday, who is also a director in the AgriGold. At this point, Minister Pullarao denied the allegation and said that he was ready to quit politics if the charges were proved and dared Jagan Mohan Reddy to accept the challenge. Ministers Yanamala Ramakrishnudu, K Atchennaidu and Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu rushed to the rescue of Minister Pullarao and dared Jagan Mohan Reddy to accept the challenge. Chandrababu Naidu had even suggested to Speaker Kodela Sivaprasada Rao to take action against the Leader of Opposition if he failed to prove his charges against the Minister.
At this stage, TDP legislator V Anitha said that the YSR Congress had mislead the Speaker’s statement in the past and was making false allegation against the Minister now lowering their image. Responding to the member’s statement, Speaker Sivaprasada Rao said that his statement was misinterpreted and his image was lowered. He announced that he would screen the video footage of his statement in the Assembly and would seek action accordingly. He then adjourned the House for 10 minutes.
The House resumed after the break and watched the video footage of his speech before the International Womens Parliament.
However, Jagan Mohan Reddy accused the TDP of misleading the Assembly and diverting the AgirGold issue by bringing in issues that are not connected to the subject being debated today.
