Hyderabad: Samshabad airport here and the airports in Mumbai and Chnnai have been asked to be alert on Sunday as threat to hijack flights had been received. The National Security Gaurds are standing by the airport authorities and anti/ hijack drill had been going on at all the three places in a full fledged manner.

All the preparations had started when a woman sent an email on Saturday to a senior police officer in Mumbai. The woman informed the police officer that she had overheard a conversation between six persons at a restaurant. She understood that they were planning to hijack flights simultaneously from Mumbai, Hyderabad and Chennai airports. Following the alert issued by the police officer, the counter terrorism forces have been pressed into service.

There was a similar hijack threat in January 2015 and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) which is in charge of airport security has prepared a counter-hijack plan and exercise. Two years back the threat was to hijack an Air India flight from Mumbai to Kabul, the Afghanistan capital. CISF Director General OP Singh told media representatives that all the precautionary measures have been taken inside and outside the airports. He said there is no reason to panic and the three airports are functioning normally. He said an emergency security plan is being implemented.
