HCU turns tense on first death anniversary of Rohith

Hyderabad: Tension prevailed at Hyderabad Central University (HCU) on Tuesday when students in large numbers came to pay tributes on the first death anniversary of  Rohith Vemula, the Dalit research scholar, who committed suicide on January 17, 2016.

The students raised slogans ‘Do Justice to Rohith Family’ and went in a rally from the hostels to main gate and tried to come out of the university premises. However, the police obstructed them leading to a tense situation.

On the other hand, the police obstructed the activists of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and various student unions at the main gate when they tried to enter the university premises to participate in the Rohith death anniversary programme. Tense situation prevailed when students from inside and AAP activists from outside staged protests.

Additional police force rushed to the university to bring the situation under control. The students raised slogans saying ‘police go back’’. The students announced that they will organize Rohit’s death anniversary as announced earlier. The students, professors and leaders from various people’s unions gathered at the university. But the police obstructed the students saying the students have no permission to conduct any meeting.
