Haryana Tense After Dera Chief Found Guilty In Rape Case
Panchukula: Court convicted Dera Sacha Sauda Chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim in rape case of 2002 on Friday afternoon which led to tense in Haryana state.
Chief Gurmeet has lakhs of followers in Punjab, Haryana who was accused by female follower (sadhvi) for raping her inside the campus in Sirsa town of Haryana, 260kms from Chandigarh.
In 2002, the victim, through anonymous letter to then PM Atal Bihari Vahpayee and Punjab HC Judge complained about the rape attack by Chief. She also accused that Gurmeet was involved in raping other females too in Ashram.
High Court ordered CBO probe in the case and registered sexual exploitation case against Gurmeet Singh.
CBI recorded the statement of two victims and it took nearly 15 years to get a verdict.
Ram Chandar Chattrapathi, a journalist, who first reported on this was shot dead in the year 2002. Once the verdict came against Dera Chief, tension prevailed in Haryana. Police personnel, CRPF, were deployed in Haryana and Punjab to bring the situation in control.
Authorities have suspended mobile services, internet services, SMS services along with voice calls. An indefinite curfew was imposed in Sirsa. Railways have cancelled nearly 200 rains as security concerns.
