Gujarat Rajya Sabha Election Concludes, Results By 5 PM
Ahmedabad: With all the MLAs casting their votes for Rajya Sabha election in Gujarat, the election concluded. The results will be declared at 5 pm.
Rajya Sabha polls have been in the news for the past few days as the Congress Party has been facing a crisis with its crucial leaders like Vaghela leaving the party just before the election.
With this, the party senior leader and Congress President Sonia Gandhi’s political secretary Ahmed Patel’s win has become very tough.
The Congress Party, which has 51 MLAs in the House sent 44 of its MLAs to Bengaluru resort to protect them from getting poached. Others stayed back. As the MLAs, including Vaghela, did not resign for their membership, they still remain as Congress MLAs.
The Nationalist Congress Party, which maintained suspense over its support, finally declared that it will support Congress on Tuesday morning. However, two of the Congress MLAs stated that they voted for the BJP.
Meanwhile, the BJP ensured the win of its national president Amit Shah and Union Minister Smriti Irani, as the party had 121 members in the Assembly.
With the BJP fielding the third candidate, Balwantsinh Rajput, against Ahmed Patel, his win for Patel has become doubtful.
Ahmed Patel should get 45 votes to be elected. However, if both the candidates end up not getting the required 45 votes, the second preference votes of all the MLAs will be counted. If that happen the BJP will win.
