Goa Woman Locked Up For Two Decades Post Her Protest Over Marriage
Panaji: A woman, who came back to her parent’s home after discovering that her husband was already married, was locked up in a dark room for 20 long years. This chilling incident took place in the Candolim area of Goa.
The family, miffed with her decision, locked her up in the dark room, alleging that she was behaving unnaturally. The woman, who is in her fifties now, was rescued by Goa Police after receiving information from women’s rights NGO Bailancho Saad.
According to Superintendent of Police (Crime) Karthik Kashyap, the woman was found in a room without clothes and urine all around. She was sent for medical examination and then admitted to the Panaji-based Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour.
The house, where the woman was locked up, was also occupied by her brother’s family. Her brother has given a statement to the police alleging that his sister was mentally unstable and hence was confined to the room.
The woman had married a man from Mumbai 20 years ago. On going to her in-law’s place, she came to know that he was already married. Shocked and depressed, she returned to her parents. But the angry family, instead of offering support, locked her up in a dark room, where she remained until her rescue. She was being providing food and water through a window.
The police have booked a case against the family under Section 342 (wrongful confinement) of the IPC. Investigations are on, though no arrests have been made.
