Floating Solar Plant Coming UP At Tourist Hot Spot Mudasarlova, Nature Lovers Unhappy

Nature lovers are a worried lot over the proposed floating solar power plant at Mudasarlova on outskirts of the port city. The plant is expected to add 2,000 KW to the power grid.

Visakhapatnam: The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation is planning to set up a floating solar power plant at Mudasarlova, the water reservoir that partly caters to the needs of this port city. Coming up as part of the Smart City Projects, the plant will have an installed capacity of 2,000 KW.

Located at the foothills of Simhachalam Ghats near Arilova, the reservoir supplies about 1 million gallons of water a day to the city. Akin to the recently launched floating solar plant at Kayamkulam in Kerala, the Mudasarlova plant will be an environmentally friendly unit.

In general, solar plants require a lot of land. By installing the panels on the surface of a reservoir, vast land use can be eliminated. Moreover, floating solar plants also control evaporation losses.

However, nature lovers are upset with the decision. The sprawling park beside the reservoir and the surrounding hills attract thousands of picnickers and tourists, who come to witness the scenic beauty. With solar panels coming up on the reservoir, nature lovers feel the place would then not be as beautiful.
