Fishermen to get accident insurance cover
Hyderabad: The Telangana Government is planning to extend accident insurance facility of Rs 5 lakh to the fishermen’s community in the state. There is a proposal to bring out a GO to this effect. As part of other measures, fishermen would be given rights to net their catch in all lakes and tanks.
Finance Minister Etala Rajender disclosed the plan at an event to mark World Fisheries Day on Monday held at Indira Priyadarshini Auditorium in Hyderabad. Fisheries and Animal Husbandry Minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav was also present.
He took a dig at the previous governments for considering only coastal districts for fisheries development and ignoring the fishermen in the Telangana region. He said the government will encourage the fishermen to double their income through lakes. The fishermen should use the income they get on education and housing instead of constructing temples which will be done by the government. Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao is focusing on empowering fishermen by distributing fish seeds free of cost, Rajender said.
He maintained the step is not for appeasing anyone or for votes; the main aim is to ensure the fishermen’s community is financially sound. The flagship programme of Mission Kakatiya is advantageous for the fishermen as pisciculture can be developed in the lakes, ponds and water bodies. The government has dispersed fish seed in these water bodies to increase fish cultivation, he said adding that it is just the beginning and a lot more has to be done for the backward fisheries community.
