New Delhi: The Central government announced a Diwali gift for its over 50 lakh employees on Thursday. It is a two per cent increase in dearness allowance with effect from July 1, 2016. Nearly 58 lakh pensioners would also benefit from the government gesture.
Earlier this year, the government raised DA by 6% to 125% of the basic pay. The DA was later merged into the basic pay following implementation of the 7th Pay Commission recommendation.
… and cars and flats for diamond workers
Savji Dholakia, a diamond merchant in Surat, who hits headlines every year just before Diwali for his liberal gifts to hundreds of his employees, has again done it. This time, he gifted 400 flats and 1,260 cars to his staff as festival bonus.
According to reports, Dholakia’s diamond company, Hare Krishna Exports, has spent Rs 51 crores on Diwali gifts alone since this year happened to be the company’s golden jubilee. It also named 1,716 employees as best performers. Last year, the diamond company had rewarded its top performers with 491 cars and 200 flats.
A few years ago, Dholakia, while gifting luxury cars to his staff, had said that he believed in giving something to his staff that would add value to their lives rather than money which the employees would spend.
