A special court has sent Dinakaran and his close aide to judicial custody for 15 days in ‘cash for symbol’ scam on Monday. He was arrested on April 25th.
After the police had stated the court that the accused were not required for custodial interrogation, Special Judge Poonam Chaudhary sent Dinakaran and his aide Mallikarjuna to Tihar Jail till May 15.
The police further told the court that they would be examining many more witnesses in the case and that the investigation is still on.
When the police custody of both the accused end, they will be produced before the court again.
Meanwhile, the court also extended the judicial custody of alleged hawala operator Nathu Singh till May 15. His judicial custody was ended and was produced before the court.
When the defense cited security hurdles in bringing them to the court every time, the court directed Tihar Central Jail authorities to produce the politician and his associate before the court via videoconference.
Dinakaran was arrested after four days of questioning for allegedly attempting to bribe an unidentified EC official to obtain the official symbol of AIADMK ‘two leaves’ for his faction.
There were also accusations that he allegedly arranged amount from undisclosed sources and getting the amount transferred from Chennai to Delhi through illegal channels.
A day after his arrest, the court remanded the duo to five-day custody of Delhi Police, which cited the need to unearth the money trail and the entire conspiracy in the case.
As Mallikarjuna accompanied Dinakaran since the arrest of alleged middleman Sukesh Chandrasekar on April 16, he was arrested with the claim of facilitating a deal between Dinakaran and Chandrasekar.
