Dallas Telugus recall Brown’s services, want AP and TS to erect statues

Dallas: The North Texas Telugu Association (TANTEX), Dallas, organized various literary and cultural programmes on the occasion of its 111th episode of “Nela Nela Telugu Vennela” on October 16.

The chief guest, Dr Thotakura Prasad, former president of TANTEX and TANA, spoke on Charles Brown, the saviour of many valuable Telugu literary works. Recalling the yeomen service of Charles Brown to the Telugu language by retrieving, printing and safeguarding many classical literary works, Dr Prasad narrated the great scholar’s life and works. Brown’s greatest contribution to Telugu was his Telugu-English dictionary, the first such effort. He was also instrumental in transferring 2,440 literary works, including around 2,000 palm leaf manuscripts, collected by McKenzie and Leiden and others, to the Madras Library for their safe keeping, and in popularizing Vemana Satakam.  Dr Prasad said that Brown, a Britisher, had not only learnt the Telugu language but also mastered it. He suggested that both the Telugu states should institute scholarships to students in Brown’s name and erect statues in his honour for his dedicated and selfless service to Telugu.

Earlier, the programme coordinator Billa Praveen, who presided over the literary programme, welcomed the gathering. The event started with rendition of Annamaachaarya kirtanas by Anipindi Meenakshi and her group, followed by free verse presentations by Dr MDN Rao and others, a parody show by  Piska Satyanarayana, and a talk on “Language and Letters” by Mada Dayakar, and a hilarious skit by Maddukuri Chandrahas. Later Atluri Swarna conducted a quiz show. All the programmes were broadcast live on Teluguone, Radio Khushi and highlights were shown on many TV channels.

The chief guest was felicitated by Dr Jonnalagadda Subrahmanyam,  president, TANTEX; Gurram Srinivasa Reddy, President, Executive Committee; Uppalapati Krishna Reddy, Dr Urimindi Narasimha Reddy and other members.
