Congress Winning RS Seat From Gujarat Comes Under Shadow
New Delhi / Ahmedabad: Bharatiya Janata Party is confident of winning all the three Rajya Sabha seats falling vacant from Gujarat.
This confidence of the ruling party at Centre stems from the fact that six Congress MLAs from Gujarat have quit their party to join the ruling BJP. This brings the strength of Congress in Gujarat Assembly to 51 from 57 in the 182-member House.
For safety, Congress late on Friday night has flown 44 of its MLAs to a resort near Bangalore for “safe keep”. The MLAs reached Bengaluru Airport at 2.30 am and moved to a resort near Ramanagara. They are under the escort of Party MP DK Suresh. Six of the senior Congress MLAs have stayed back in Ahmedabad.
Congress has re-nominated Ahmad Patel, the political secretary of Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, from Gujarat. He is expected to scrape through if there are no more defections from the Congress to the BJP side.
BJP has nominated Amit Shah, Smriti Irani and Balvantsinh Rajput, a close relative of rebel Congress leader Shankersinh Vaghela, who recently resigned from the Congress as its Leader of Opposition. All the three filed their nominations on Friday.
Election to the three Rajya Sabha seats falling vacant from Gujarat is scheduled on August 8, 2017.
BJP is confident of winning all the three seats, as it is banking on cross voting from the Congress camp.
Meanwhile, Congress has demanded that Election Commission lodge a criminal case against BJP for “poaching” its MLAs using “money and muscle” power. BJP has denied such a move and condemned Congress for making such an allegation.
