BJP’s Ram Madhav Set To Play Key Role In AP Politics
Amaravati: The rank and file of the BJP in Andhra Pradesh is looking at the party national general secretary Varanasi Ram Madhav to come to the party’s rescue in the State. Now that party senior leader M Venkaiah Naidu is out of the party, heading to occupy the Vice-President office, the BJP leaders who have been looking for expansion of its base have started reaching out to Ram Madhav.
The leaders could not expand the party’s base in the State though there was scope for the same. The leaders on several occasions have pressed for expansion of the party at the grassroots. They have also complained against the ally-TDP for preventing the party’s growth in the State, when BJP took up membership drive. In West Godavari district, where the party has one MP from Narsapur (Gokaraju Gangaraju) and one MLA and Minister in the State Cabinet (P Manikyala Rao) from Tadepalli Gudem, the leaders complained to the party high command that the TDP was preventing the party’s membership drive. They have categorically told the high command that membership drive cannot be carried out unless the party breaks the alliance with the TDP. More: BJP Starts Groundwork To Capture Power In Telangana
It was when Amit Shah addressed the party booth level workers in Vijayawada on May 25, there was an open display of placards by the leaders asking the party to sever ties with the TDP. This open display for break-up with the TDP is clearly understood by the party national leadership which had comfortably and conveniently sidelined Venkaiah Naidu, who is seen as major stumbling block for the party’s growth in AP, as the right opportunity.
As the party gets ready for revamp, the leaders here are of the view that the high command might ask MP Gokaraju Gangaraju to head the party State unit as a compromise candidate. While Venkaiah Naidu-Chandrababu Naidu wanted incumbent K Haribabu to continue as the party State unit president, the other leaders have been pressing for MLC Somu Veerraju’s candidature for the party president. However, the party national leadership is not ready to go hard completely keeping Naidu’s men away from the party and bring in his rivals. As a compromising candidate, it is said that Gangaraju’s candidature was brought in. More: Sons of Well-Known Telugu Film Family Named In Drugs Case; Sabharwal Gets Threatening Calls
The leaders also are of the view that Gangaraju’s appointment as the party State unit president would also give some time for the party to continue the alliance with the TDP in the State. Chandrababu Naidu, who is not comfortable with Somu Veerraju or Daggubati Purandheswari and Kanna Lakshminarayana, is said to be positive on the candidature of Gangaraju, though not comfortable.
It is now to be seen how Ram Madhav would revamp the party and prepare it for the next round of elections in 2019.
