Birdman wins Oscar for the Best Picture

WASHINGTON: The long-awaited Academy Awards were finally out today putting an end to the endless predictions about the likely winners of the Oscars and the expectations of all those involved in film making and acting.

The event honored many but the top honors at the Oscars went to “Birdman”. Birdman won the best picture award competing with seven other nominated movies including Boyhood and the much-talked about American Sniper.

The Oscar for the best actor went to Eddie Redmayne for his lead role in “The Theory of Everything”. He portrayed Stephen Hawking, a cosmologist who suffered with ALS disease. Grand Budapest Hotel was another movie that won awards in several categories at the glittering 87th Academy awards function held in Los Angeles.

The following are some of the prominent awards:

Best actress – Julianne Moore; Still Alice

Best supporting actor – J.K. Simmons; movie – Whiplash

Best supporting Actress – Patricia Arquette for Boyhood

Hairstyle & Costume design – Grand Budapest Hotel

Best foreign movie – IDA (Poland)

Best short film – The Phone Call

Sound mixing – Whiplash

Sound editing – American Sniper

Supporting actress – Boyhood

Visual effects – Interstellar

Animated short film – Feast

Best animated feature film – Big Hero 6

Best production design – Grand Budapest Hotel

Best screenplay – Imitation Game

The event, attended by Hollywood’s glitterati,  was hosted by Patrick Harris, best known for playing in a role in the television series “How I Met Your Mother”.  Another highlight was a song sung by Lady Gaga as a tribute to the iconic film of yesteryears, Sound of Music.
