Bhim Army Chief Arrested
Shimla: The main accused in Saharanpur violence was arrested by Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force on Thursday. The chief of Bhim Army, Chandrashekhar, who was alleged to be behind the recent violence in Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh was arrested from Dalhousie in Himachal Pradesh on Thursday.
The Dalit rights organisation was headed by the 30-year-old lawyer. The allegations are that Bhim Army was involved in the caste violence that broke out in the Western UP district on May 9.
After the violence in Saharanpur, Chandrashekhar and his two close aides went missing and the UP police recently announced a reward of ₹ 12,000 each for information leading to the capture of the trio.
Chandrashekhar, who is wanted in connection with violence in Saharanpur on May 9, had earlier offered to surrender before the court when he emerged on stage at a massive rally in New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.
The Bhim Army, in protest against alleged atrocities on Dalits, had called for a Mahapanchayat in Saharanpur on May 9. While the police denied permission for the public meeting, invitations were extended on social media.
Hundreds had started making their way to the venue of the meeting when things turned sour.
Supporters of the Bhim Army clashed with the police, following which; Chandrashekhar was booked by the police.
