Belligerent Move By China Over Arunachal Pradesh

Virtually taking India head-on, China made a rather pugnacious act by announcing six names to places in Arunachal Pradesh in its language. This means- China has claimed total authority on those places- which forms two thirds of the frontier state.

New Delhi: The state-run Xianhua news agency announced that ‘the places are part of China’. This move is in response to India’s recent official welcome to spiritual head Dalai Lama to the border state- which pricked the communist nation. China has strongly protested it and the relations have taken a dive since then.

“China’s Ministry of Civil Affairs announced on April 14 that it had “standardized” in Chinese characters, Tibetan and Roman alphabet the names of six places in ‘South Tibet’, which India calls ‘Arunachal Pradesh’, in accordance with the regulations of the central government, The official names of the six places using the Roman alphabet are Wo’gyainling, Mila Ri, Qoid ngarbo Ri, Mainquka, B mo La and Namkapub Ri”, state-run Global Times reported today.

India expected some diplomatic offensive from China since the Marxist country has strongly warned India that any official status to Dalai Lama’s visit will be met with retaliatory consequences and it will do everything to protect territorial sovereignty.

China has been claiming south of Tibet as its soil and argued that India has abruptly named it Arunachal Pradesh. According to researchers from China and Tibet these names have existed since ancient times, but had never been standardised before. Announcing the names is like a remediation, they stated.

The India-China border dispute covers the 3,488 km-long Line of Actual Control (LAC). While China claims Arunachal Pradesh as South Tibet, India asserts that the dispute covers Aksai Chin area which was occupied by China during the 1962 war. The two sides have so far held 19 rounds of talks with Special Representatives to resolve the boundary dispute but of no avail. India asserts that Arunachal Pradesh is an inseparable part of India.

Modi Opens Strategic Bhupen Hazarika Bridge Between Assam, Arunachal

The 9.5 KM long Dhola-Sadiya Bhupen Hazarika bridge inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi on Friday will help India protect Arunachal Pradesh from Chinese incursions besides reducing traveling time between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh by four hours.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated what is billed as a strategic bridge- called the Dhola-Sadiya Bridge- at Sadiya in Tinsukia district of Assam on Friday. The 9.5 kilometre long bridge was built with ₹ 2056 crore on river Lohit in the eastern most tip of Assam connecting Arunachal Pradesh.

After the launch, which has taken place on the completion of the three-year rule of NDA government at the Centre, Modi walked a short distance over it. The bridge was named after legendary Bollywood playback singer and lyricist Bhupen Hazarika, he announced.

The bridge will reduce travel time between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh by four hours.

The three-lane bridge was built in such a way that it could accommodate movement of battle tanks, tropps and artillery.

As China has been making advances on several fronts on and off, India can now deploy its troops at vital installations and the movement through the bridge will make it easier for the army to carry out its operations. This can cause China a bit of worry.

According to Defence sources, China infiltrated deep into Indian territory- up to 20 kilometres- and several times it reached Chaglagam in Anjaw district. India could not respond due to circuitous road network as well as lack of proper way to take tanks to the border posts. Till now, the army troops can enter Arunachal through Tejpur in Assam which takes two days to reach the border areas of Arunachal. Now with the launch of the bridge, they can go in few hours and will have wider access to the border. The tanks can also go directly to the destined positions.

India has already made attempts to give a befitting reply to Chinese advances by landing several fighter planes close to the border areas. With the launch of this bridge, India can challenge the Chinese infiltration, sources said.

“This is not just Assam’s pride, but the country’s pride” Mr Modi said.

By-elections prove Modi is right

  • BJP retains its seats

New Delhi: If the results of the by-polls to four Lok Sabha and ten Assembly seats are any indication, the people of the country have accepted the bold move by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to demonetize the Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 notes in spite of the pain it caused.

The by-elections were held across six states in the country. The opposition which has been blocking discussion in parliament in the name of pain to the people on account of scarcity of currency notes has failed to prove its points in the by-polls which were considered a referendum on Modi.

In Madhya Pradesh, a BJP-ruled state, the ruling party retained a Lok Sabha seat and an Assembly seat. BJP’s Gyan Singh defeated Congress candidate Himadri Singh and won Shahdol seat by a margin of over 60,000 votes. In the Nepanagar Assembly constituency, the BJP candidate Manju Dadu trounced rival Antar Singh Barde of the Congress by a huge margin of 42,198 votes. The Shahdol seat fell vacant after the death of BJP’s Dalpat Singh Paraste.

Another BJP ruled state, Assam, also returned the ruling party candidates. Pradan Barua won the Lakhaimpur Lok Sabha seat for the BJP defeating the Congress party’s Hema Prasanga Pegu by a massive majority of 1,90,219 votes. The seat was vacated by Assam Chief Minister Sarbananada Sonowal. Mansigh Rongpi of the BJP, who left the Congress in July, pocketed the Baithalangso Assembly seat beating the Congress candidate Ruponsing Ronghang by 16,600 votes.

In Arunachal Pradesh, Dasingu Pul, wife of former chief minister Kalikho Pul, who committed suicide in Augurs defeated Independent candidate Yompi Kri by a small margin of 944 votes to win the Anjaw Assembly. CPM had retained the Left Front seat and wrested another from the Congress. CPM’s Biswajit Datta defeated TMC’s Manoj Das by 16,094 votes in Khowai while in Barjala Assembly constituency the CPM youth leader Jhumu Sarkar defeated BJP’s Shista Mohan Das by 3,374 votes. The Congress suffered loss of face.

In Bengal, Trinamool Congress retained the Tamluk and Cooch Behar Lok Sabha and Monteshwar Assembly seats by huge margins tempting Mamata Banerjee to comment that the results are a rejection of PM’s demonetization move. But she missed a very important point. The BJP has ended up in second slot relegating the CPM  which was downsized to 21 percent of the vote.  The Congress had a face saver in Pondicherry where the chief minister won the by-election.
