“Beer Is A Healthy Drink”, Says AP Excise Minister

The Excise Minister’s assertion comes in the backdrop of proposals to set up “round-the-clock beer parlours” to attract foreigners to the tourism spots of Andhra Pradesh.

Amaravati: Andhra Pradesh Excise Minister KS Jawahar has termed beer “a healthy drink”, even as the State is facing anti-liquor movements.

“Beer is a healthy drink and that’s why our government is promoting its sale in the State,” Jawahar asserted on a TV talk show on a Telugu channel. His assertion was clearly aimed at countering the criticism of the New Excise Policy of the AP government. Interestingly, under the new policy, the government also plans to set up “round-the-clock beer parlours” to attract foreigners to tourism spots of the State.

Jawahar, who represents Kovur constituency of Nellore district, was inducted into the Cabinet in April.

As the Government and the Excise Minister have been promoting liquor, several villagers, in particular women, have attacked liquor shops in Atmakur of Nellore district. One of the shops was allegedly opened with the support of a ruling Telugu Desam Party leader, ignoring protests from locals.

The New Excise Policy has come into effect from July 1. According to the new policy, 10 percent fee enhancement will be made in case of bars, which were established five years ago.
