Army Jawan Arrested For Allegedly Killing A 60- Year-Old Woman
Visakhapatnam: The city police arrested an army jawan on Tuesday on the charges of killing a 60-year old widow. The accused Lanka Mohan Rao (26), originally belonging to Nellimarla town in Vizianagaram district, was staying in Visakhapatnam for some time.
DCP (Crime) T. Ravi Kumar while briefing the media on Tuesday said the accused was a Nayak in the military division in Bengaluru. According to him, Mohan Rao visited his home at Nellimarla last year on vacation and did not report back for the duties.
The deceased Mahanthi Rama Lakshmi, who was a resident of Akkayyapalem, suffered a leg fracture sometime ago. The accused Mohan Rao happened to visit her house in Akkayyapalem along with her brother-in-law Jaggu Naidu a couple of months ago. Realising that she was staying alone, Mohan Rao decided to steal her ornaments.
The accused reportedly developed relations with many women and married to a girl from Akkayyapalem last month. He landed in debt trap as he got habituated to taking loans from various people including women with whom he developed relations. He even borrowed ₹ 40, 000 from a woman recently and promised her that he would marry her too. To get rid of the debts, he planned to rob Rama Lakshmi of money and ornaments.
He made an attempt accordingly on June 13 and threw chilli powder into her eyes. As the deceased resisted him, he hacked her to death and slipped away with ornaments weighing 170 grams and ₹ 30, 000 in cash.
The police caught hold of the accused only after a week after they came to know that a black motorcycle, whose number plate contained the name ‘Mahanti’, was parked near the deceased house between 11.50 am and 1 pm on the day the murder took place. The vehicle belonged to Jaggu Naidu who admitted that he gave it to his friend Mohan Rao. The police then tracked the old cell number and social media account of Mohan Rao and arrested him.
