AP launches another lift irrigation scheme
Vijayawada: The right main canal of the Polavaram Project that connects Godavari River with Krishna River at Vijayawada was done long ago. Though the project is not completed yet, the present government could bring the canal into use by launching a lift irrigation scheme at Pattiseema. Now, it is the turn of the left main canal that takes Godavari water to Visakhapatnam. The canal comes into use with the government launching the yet another lift irrigation scheme at Purushotthapatnam in East Godavari on Thursday.
Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu laid the foundation stone for the project at Pitapuram in East Godavari district. Pitapuram and the surrounding areas that form part of the Eleru reservoir which irrigates over 2 lakh acres is the major beneficiary of the proposed lift irrigation scheme. The government, having completed the Pattiseema lift irrigation project is now launching the Purushottapatnam scheme at an estimated cost of Rs 1638 crores in the first phase. This would lift 3500 cusecs of water in the first phase and fill the Eleru reservoir. The second phase of the project would lift another 1400 cusecs of water and pump into the left canal.
The left canal, besides providing water for irrigation in the Godavari district under Eleru reservoir, is set to provide additional water to Visakhapatnam for its drinking and industrial purposes. The Visakhapatnam city now requires over 137 tmcft of water, while the city is able to manage around 44 tmcft from the local resources. The left main canal is set to give 20 tmcft of water for Visakhapatnam to address its requirements.
