AP Assembly thanks Center for Cabinet nod to package
Amaravati: The Andhra Pradesh Assembly on Thursday adopted a resolution thanking the Central government for giving cabinet approval for the special package that was promised to the State. Though the Opposition YSR Congress tried to protest against the package promised by the government that included the Polavaram Project and financial support to the backward districts, the Assembly passed the resolution thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Ministers Arun Jaitely, M Venkaiah Naidu, Nirmala Sitaraman, Y S Chowdary and others for their continued support in taking initiative to help the State government through the special package.
Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu sought to impress upon the members that the package would be a substitute to the benefits that would have come to the State through the special category status. “What all is expected to the State through special category status is now assured by the Central government in the form of special package. This is possible because of our continued persuasion and cordial relations that we were maintaining with the Center,” Chandrababu Naidu said.
Leader of Opposition Y S Jaganmohan Reddy pointed out that Polavaram Project and the funds to the backward districts, which were part of the Reorganisation Act, were also included in the package leading to injustice to the State. He further alleged the ruling TDP of indulging in heavy corruption in the Polavaram Project by taking over the execution work. He turned down the claims of the TDP that Polavaram was a dream of Chandrababu Naidu. He said that late Y S Rajasekhar Reddy had completed 90 per cent of the right and left canals of the projects and sought to blame Chandrababu Naidu for staking claim. He questioned the continuation of the contractor despite irregularities in the Polavaram Project.
Replying to the corruption charges, Chandrababu Naidu said that he had taken up Polavaram Project on highest priority. “I have marked Monday as Polavaram day in my diary. The Congress government had used the project to make money,” he said. He thanked the Central government for its support to the State and asserted that he would complete the project as per schedule by 2018. He said he had taken up the project as more than 16 such national projects taken up by the Central government have not moved even an inch further.
Even as the Opposition YSR Congress members continued to protest alleging corruption in the Polavaram works and denial of special category status to the State, Speaker Kodela Sivaprasada Rao took voting on the resolution and declared that it was passed.
