Andhra Pradesh domestic workers form union

Vijayawada: For the first time in the new Andhra Pradesh, a trade union for domestic workers was formed here on Tuesday. The Andhra Pradesh Domestic Workers Union elected new office bearers headed by Anandas Sitamma from Krishna District as president, Bammidi Sanyasamma from Vizianagaram District as vice-president, Velli Lakshmi from Srikakulam District as joint secretary and Kunchakarla Ramana from Guntur District as treasurer. The Domestic Workers Forum of India coordinator Sr. A Lourdu has been elected general secretary, besides Kommanaboyina Alivelu Mangamma, Thotapalli Nukarathnam and Singidi Paidamma as executive committee members.

At the first general body meeting held here on Tuesday, the delegates from Krishna, Guntur, Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam districts have formed the new union to fight for their rights. They raised the voice for the implementation of the Minimum Wages Act and wanted the Labour Department to extend to them the benefits of the unorganised sector.

Montfort Social Institute director Varghese Theckanath, retired DRDO scientist Maria Soosai, social activists Sudha Goparaju and Dara Gopi welcomed the domestic workers forming the new trade union. They extended support to them and felt that the labour department should ensure all the benefits of the unorganised sector, including health insurance, to the domestic workers.

Noted trade union activist and advocate, Chitti Babu, conducted the elections for the new body.
