AIADMK Factions Merge, OPS To Be Party Convenor, EPS As Co-Convenor

The much-awaited merger of the two warring factions of AIADMK became a reality on Monday.

Chennai: The much-awaited merger of the two warring factions of AIADMK has become a reality on Monday. Chief Minister E Palaniswami and his predecessor O Panneerselvam shook hands at AIADMK headquarters announcing the merger of two factions.

While OPS will be the party convenor, EPS will be the co-convenor.  The party that split after the death of their iconic leader and former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has finally united to save themselves from the midterm polls.

“O Panneerselvam will be the leader of this party. I will be the co-convenor of this party. KP Munusamy will be deputy co-convenor of this party, so will R Vaithilingam. We will all work together. There will be 11 people running the party headed by the convenor and the co-convenor. Our first priority will be to clear the two leaves symbol,” Chief Minister E Palaniswami said.

“I welcome all party cadres. I thank everyone who stood by me for the last six months. We are now going to Amma’s samadhi to seek her blessing. I am happy to be back in your midst,” said O Panneerselvam.

However, Deputy Secretary TTV Dhinakaran has become a hitch, as he raised curtains for the emergence of the third group recently. Dhinakaran, who earlier claimed that he was for the unity of party, suddenly changed his stance after Chief Minister E Palaniswamy and other leaders passed a resolution removing him from the post of late.

Thought there was a lot of speculation about the unification of two factions, it was O Panneerselvam who became a hurdle. He did not give his nod to the merger till almost all the demands were fulfilled. Even on the day of the merger on Monday, when everyone was expecting an announcement at 12.00 noon, OPS again raised the issue of removal of Sasikala from the party and did not arrive at the party headquarters as expected.

However, the differences were sorted out in the last minute discussions. Finally, both factions agreed to leave Sasikala issue to the Election Commission.

Meanwhile, actor Kamal Haasan, who is said to be nursing political aspirations tweeted, “Tamil people have had Gandhi cap, saffron cap, Kashmir cap, and now a clown cap. Is this enough or do you want? Enjoy Tamils.”

The Chief Secretary of Tamil Nadu Girija Vaidyanathan went to Raj Bhavan to discuss the AIADMK merger and cabinet reshuffle. It is being said that the swearing-in ceremony of Panneerselvam is expected to take place at 5 pm.
