After 19 years NSP & M’guda to get waters
- Harish to release waters tomorrow
Hyderabad: A long wait of 19 years for Krishna waters under Nagarjuna Sagar is coming to a positive end as decks are cleared for releasing waters to Nagarjuna Sagar and Miryalaguda areas on November 9.
Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao is scheduled to release Krishna waters through SLBC of Eliminety Madhava Reddy low-level canal to irrigate as many as 80,000 acres on Wednesday. Thanks to the State government for its persistent efforts to complete the works of the canal. The problem has been continuing unabated due to negligence of successive governments and official apathy. Now that the TRS Government has a plan to irrigate over one crore acres over five years, officials are virtually put on tenterhooks to complete the related works.
Harish Rao, at the behest of Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, has been evincing keen interest in completing the works. His efforts are getting fructified as the officials and contractors are working day and night. The government extended the time to complete the project by 2015 while it was to be completed by 2009 as per previous schedule. The total cost of the canal is pegged at Rs 272 crore and spent Rs 260 crore so far.
