A case worthy of LOL
This is a case worth LOL. If an ordinary person is asked where the Marshall Islands are, he will give you a quizzical look. The Islands literally came into public view last year when they sued India for failing to halt the nuclear arms race in the International Court of Justice in The Hague.
India was one of nine nuclear-armed countries Marshall Islands had mentioned in its lawsuit which said “the world’s nine nuclear weapons states have violated various obligations to negotiate in good faith to dismantle their nuclear arsenals.”
India sought to dismiss the case on the ground that the Islands did not have jurisdiction. The UN court, on Wednesday, upheld India’s claim.
With a population of less than 70,000, why did the Islands take on India?
Marshall Islands have seen and suffered the impact of nuclear tests on people, environment and natural habitat. So the Islands government has decided to make an international bid to halt nuclear tests. The main culprit is the US which had conducted over 100 tests on the Islands.
Interestingly, India is the only country that has responded to the suit. No other country, including the major nuclear powers, have not bothered about it.
